Demo started in full on Tuesday. The first two days they filled an entire dumpster just by removing the kitchen (cabinets, countertops, ceiling, floor), and the plaster and drywall from the walls around the bathroom and pantry. I'll have to post some pictures later, as Molly needed the camera for shopping. :)
They also took off the porch roof. We lose some shade in the morning, but it lets in a lot of light, and it makes the back of the house look so much nicer. And at least 1/2 the deck is still shaded by the trees in back.
Some other surprises:
-- A couple of the heat ducts running to the 2nd floor are wrapped in asbestos, so they won't come out until we do the abatement for the addition - probably next week.
-- There is a crazy amount of old knob and tube wiring. I've got several pictures.
-- There is some classic old wallpaper in the kitchen. If this were an episode of "This Old House", we would spend thousands of dollars restoring it, but it isn't, so we won't.
-- It looks like the original wood floor in the kitchen will be usable. It was covered with subfloor and laminate.
-- The current plan is to frame a new wall on the south side of the main floor - where the door to the addition and the french doors are. The plumbing from the existing upstairs bathroom will go in this wall, and it will also support the new beams (as opposed to putting the into the exterior brick wall. So we lose a couple inches of space, but not a big deal overall. We'll also get the added benefit of insulation, for our guests who like it warm.
